Comments I am sure I am not the only person in the village or Whitchurch Hill, Woodcote and Pangbourne for that matter, to be thoroughly perplexed and aggravated by BT’s decision to place us in the Newbury rather than Reading Area Phone Book. Why on earth would I or someone in Caversham want to know the names and numbers of plumbers in Great Bedwyn or Lambourn and not those on our doorstep? The fact that we are in the Newbury Phone Book also means the private number section is totally useless if you want to find someone in the bulk of the Reading area. It would be far more logical for BT to do what Thomson Locals have done and draw the boundary of the two areas further west at an equal distance between Reading and Newbury. That way these phone books would be of more use than just propping up table legs.

Comments My deepest sympathy to Dorothy Howes and family for the loss and burial tomorrow Friday 13th August 2010 of my deerest mate Dennis Howes. I remember as a kid we used to have a ride on his horse and cart when he was delivering milk along Hardwick Road. We were close great mates until I left the village in 1952 to join the Navy.

Comments I am moving from Canada to the area in September 2010. I have been looking for a nice cottage/house to rent in the outskirts of Reading and have fallen in love with your village, Whitchurch on Thames. There are several properties on estate agent websites but if there is any other way to deal with landlords directly, or if anyone knows of a property coming up for rent I would welcome any information. I would be interested in a year's lease to begin with. Thank you.

Comments Hi! All. Have just been given this great web site that has brought back some wonderful memories. In 1941, I was only 5 we moved from London to live in Swanston Cottages in Whitchurch. I went to the local Primary school. I used to sing in the church choir. I remember the large number of USA troops that were camped next to the church during the war. Also a USA tank that collided with the wall opposite the shop. I have lived for the past 54 years in New Zealand and Australia. I wondered if there was anyone there in the village that remembers me?? Mike.

Comments Hi Mike, I came to Whitchurch with my family in 1977, so about 20 years after you left. But maybe some memories overlap. The shop when we first came was called Sellwood's Store. It was run by a couple who owned it and lived over it. It sold just about everything domestic and included a post office counter. I believe that during the war some of the soldiers in the Village were billeted in this house (The Little House) which is about 50 metres below the shop. The lady who lived here for many years before us was more than a bit of a character and very well known in the village. Her name was Mrs. Hartcup. I gather she was often seen cycling down the High Street when she must have been well into her eighties. The cricket field was brought back into use after the war by its owner Hugh Whitelock, and is still in use today. The estate built for those soldiers and for Polish airmen still exists, although I doubt if they would recognise it now. The hall on that estate which I believe was built at that time, or just post war, is still our Village Hall. Does any of this stir memories? Harry

Comments Hi! Harry, Many thanks for your email which certainly stirred up some memories. I certainly remember Sellwood's Store and remember Mrs Hartcup. I trust the location will remain a peaceful area away from the hustle & bustle of the City life. Sincerely, Mike Shepherd

Comments I've just returned from a walk into Pangbourne and have to report that the amount of dog mess on the route made it thoroughly unpleasant. Pushing a buggy with a young child walking alongside made the mess hard to avoid and at times on the Whitchurch High Street it felt like walking through a mess minefield. This has always been a problem but right now it seems that it is getting much worse. The health risks to children and the sheer unpleasantness of getting the mess over shoes and trousers makes this a real concern for me. Is there anything that can be done?

Comments mark, have to agree with you. The issue is definitely getting worse. I have nothing against people having dogs but please be a responsible owner and clear up the mess. It is part of being a dog owner !!! Also I would like to report that the number of dogs that appear to be wandering about without their owners is also increasing. These are not strays but pets that the owners can't be bothered to ensure are kept on a lead or secure in their own property. I would remind all dog owners that allowing a dog to foul the footpath is an offence as is failing to control a dog. So Mark there is something that can be done about it if you witness owners not clearing up after their dog.

Comments I hope the installation of the new dog waste bins around the village will help encourage people to clear up after their dogs! I am a dog owner and it really annoys me to see this. Often I will clear up after other peoples dogs if it particularly prominent. I think around the school, Eastfield Lane and Muddy Lane where children are present are particularly important areas but then again so is the High St. So come on you dog walkers when Fido makes a mess poop and scoop!

Comments In my view the appropriate place to comment on - the policies and practices of the Whitchurch Bridge Company, - it's ineffective regulation by Act of Parliament and Secreatry of State for Transport, and - apparent disinterest of Oxfordshire council and representatives is almost anywhere other than the Whitchurch Bridge Company website! When the Directors and shareholders of the Bridge contribute to the capital cost of a new bridge, rather than delegating it to the present users of the bridge, they will have my respect. Until then I believe that those people paying the Capital cost of thenew bridge should own a bit of it !

Comments Peter, couldn't agree with you more ref the bridge. Perhaps if they had bothered to clear some of the snow and ice from their bridge then it wouldn't have been the most dangerous road I had to use between home and Newbury. Maybe if instead of stopping all the traffic to claim their 40 pieces of silver they had made an attempt to provide a safe environment then local opinion might not be so anti the bridge company. However I doubt peoples opinion or indeed safety is high on the agenda

Comments The local council should make a concerted effort to help tollfreeze with the petition to stop the constant price hikes on the Whitchurch / Pangbourne toll bridge. In current times the affect that a 100% rise has on the local community - Whitchurch, Pangbourne, Goring Heath, Woodcote and the many other surrounding areas - is highly acute. The price hike is felt by those from all walks of life, be they commuters, single parents, students or tradesmen. The council must address this issue and make a concerted effort for the people of our community.

Comments Hi, I'm trying to find ancestors in Whitchurch and I'm a bit confused about 19th century geography. I wonder if you have anyone there who can tell me: was "Whitchurch Gate" in the same place as Whitchurch Hill, or would it relate to the toll bridge area? Please don't put any great effort into it, but if you have any local history buffs I'm sure they would indulge a fellow sufferer!!Thanks
